Power Loops: Mastering the Ultimate Freestyle Maneuver
Steps to Perform a Power Loop
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to perform a Power Loop with precision:
Step 1: Build Speed
- Start by flying straight and forward toward the obstacle. Maintain a steady speed to ensure you have enough momentum to complete the loop.
- As you approach the obstacle (tree, pole, or building), ensure you’re flying at a moderate altitude (higher if you’re practicing for the first time).
Step 2: Pitch Back to Initiate the Loop
- As you reach the point just before the obstacle, pull back on the pitch stick (right stick). This tilts the drone backward, pointing the camera skyward and beginning the upward part of the loop.
- Apply throttle slightly to gain altitude while pitching back to fly over the obstacle.
Step 3: Throttle Management at the Peak
- When the drone reaches the top of the loop and begins to invert, reduce throttle to avoid excessive upward momentum. The drone should start descending naturally.
- The goal is to fly in an arc, allowing gravity and forward momentum to bring the drone back down.
Step 4: Pitch Forward and Regain Throttle
- As the drone starts to descend, gently pitch forward (push the right stick up) to align the drone for the descent. This keeps the drone moving forward and helps it loop smoothly underneath the obstacle.
- Increase throttle slightly to maintain altitude and prevent the drone from dropping too fast during the descent.
Step 5: Exit the Loop Smoothly
- Once the drone passes under the obstacle, level out by centering the pitch and throttle controls, then continue flying forward.
Example:
When performing a Power Loop around a tree, you want to time the loop so that the drone starts ascending just before the tree and completes the loop with the drone passing underneath the branches.
