Immelmann Turn: The Fastest Way to Change Direction in Style

Optimizing Your Drone for the Immelmann Turn

To execute the Immelmann Turn with precision, you’ll need to ensure that your drone is optimized for rapid changes in pitch, smooth rolling, and maintaining consistent altitude. Here’s how you can tune your drone for this maneuver.

4.1 PID Tuning for Rapid Pitch and Roll

  • P-Gain for Pitch: Increase the P-gain on your pitch axis to make your drone more responsive during the initial climb of the half-loop. This ensures that your drone reacts quickly when pulling back on the pitch stick.
  • D-Gain for Smooth Rolling: Adjust the D-gain for your roll axis to prevent oscillations when performing the half-roll at the top of the loop. This keeps the roll smooth and precise, allowing for cleaner transitions.

Example:

For faster, more responsive Immelmann Turns, fine-tuning the P-gain on pitch and D-gain on roll helps maintain fluidity and accuracy during rapid direction changes.

4.2 Motor and Propeller Setup for Acro Flying

  • High KV Motors: Use high KV motors (e.g., 2207 2400KV) for maximum thrust and responsiveness during aggressive maneuvers like the Immelmann Turn. High KV motors help you accelerate quickly into the loop and recover fast after the roll.
  • Propeller Choice: Tri-blade propellers with a medium to high pitch (e.g., 5x4.5-inch) provide the thrust and control needed for climbing sharply and rolling smoothly. They offer a good balance between power and maneuverability.

Example:

A drone with 5-inch tri-blade propellers and 2400KV motors will give you the necessary agility to perform Immelmann Turns without losing momentum or altitude.

4.3 Battery Considerations

  • High C-Rating: Use LiPo batteries with a high C-rating (75C or higher) to handle the rapid throttle changes required for this maneuver. The high C-rating ensures that the battery can deliver enough power during the ascent and recovery phases of the Immelmann Turn.
  • 4S or 6S Batteries: Choose a 4S (14.8V) or 6S (22.2V) battery, depending on your drone’s setup, to provide the extra power needed to accelerate through the half-loop and complete the roll.

Example:

A 4S 1300mAh 75C battery will deliver consistent power output, allowing you to perform smooth Immelmann Turns without voltage sag during rapid throttle changes.
