Web Performance Optimization
Modern Performance Techniques: HTTP/2, WebP, and Server-Side Rendering (SSR)
HTTP/2:
HTTP/2 is a major revision of the HTTP protocol that improves performance by allowing browsers to download multiple assets in parallel over a single connection. It also reduces overhead and increases page load speed.
- Enable HTTP/2 on your server to take advantage of its performance benefits.
- Many hosting providers (like Cloudflare, AWS, and Netlify) offer HTTP/2 by default.
WebP Images:
WebP is a modern image format that provides superior compression compared to JPEG and PNG. By using WebP, you can significantly reduce image file sizes without noticeable loss in quality.
Example of WebP Support:
<picture>
<source srcset="image.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="image.jpg" alt="Fallback image for non-WebP browsers">
</picture>
In this example, the browser will load the WebP image if supported, otherwise it will load the JPEG fallback.
Server-Side Rendering (SSR):
Server-Side Rendering (SSR) generates the HTML for a webpage on the server rather than the client. This reduces the time it takes for content to appear on the page, especially for users with slower devices.
Frameworks like Next.js (for React) and Nuxt.js (for Vue.js) offer SSR out of the box, improving performance for JavaScript-heavy websites.
