Advanced Maneuvers and Techniques for Expert Drone Pilots
Immelmann Turn
The Immelmann Turn is an advanced maneuver used to rapidly reverse direction while gaining altitude. It combines a half-loop with a half-roll, making it an efficient move in drone racing or tight spaces where quick directional changes are necessary.
How to Perform an Immelmann Turn:
- Begin with a Straight Flight: Start by flying forward at a steady speed.
- Execute a Half-Loop: Pull back on the pitch stick (right stick) to pitch the drone up and start a half-loop.
- Perform a Half-Roll: Once the drone reaches the top of the loop (inverted), execute a half-roll by moving the right stick to the left or right. This will level the drone and complete the maneuver.
Example:
This maneuver is commonly used in FPV racing when you need to rapidly change direction and gain altitude, especially when transitioning from one obstacle to another on a racecourse.
