Drone Regulations in the United Kingdom
Regulatory Body: Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
UK Drone Categories
In the UK, drone operations are classified by the risk of the flight, similar to the EU's system.
Open Category:
- For drones under 25kg flown in less risky situations.
- Subcategories:
- A1: Fly over people, but avoid crowds.
- A2: Fly close to people (with the A2 Certificate of Competence).
- A3: Fly far from people and built-up areas.
Specific Category:
- For operations involving heavier drones or flights in complex environments, such as near urban areas or restricted airspace. Requires a risk assessment and operational authorization.
Certified Category:
- For high-risk flights, requiring full licensing and certification of both the operator and the drone.
General Requirements:
- Drone Registration: All drones over 250g must be registered with the CAA.
- Flyer ID: Pilots must pass a basic online theory test to obtain a Flyer ID.
Example:
If you're using drones for wedding videography or agriculture surveys in the UK, you’ll need to ensure you're flying in the appropriate category (likely Open A2 for urban filming) and have the necessary registration and certification.
