Academy / Drone Piloting: Getting Started
Fundamental Concepts: Drone Basics
Drone Transmitter and Receiver
Drones are controlled via radio signals sent from a transmitter (your controller) to a receiver onboard the drone.
Transmitter (Controller)
- The transmitter allows you to control your drone’s flight path, altitude, and camera (if equipped).
- Different frequencies are used for communication:
- 2.4 GHz: Common for most drones. This frequency strikes a balance between range and interference resistance.
- 5.8 GHz: Provides faster transmission speeds but is more prone to interference and has a shorter range.
Receiver (Onboard the Drone)
- The receiver decodes the signals from the transmitter and sends them to the drone’s flight controller and ESCs, allowing the drone to respond to your inputs.
- Advanced drones also transmit telemetry data back to the controller, such as battery levels, altitude, and signal strength.
