Matty Flip: A Signature Freestyle FPV Move

Steps to Perform a Matty Flip

Performing a Matty Flip involves careful throttle management, precise timing, and mastery of backward flying. Here’s a step-by-step guide to executing the maneuver:

Step 1: Set Up Your Backward Approach

  • Fly Backward: Start by flying backward toward the obstacle you plan to flip over (e.g., a tree, pole, or building). Use the right stick (pitch) to gently pull the drone back while maintaining a controlled, straight line.
  • Maintain Altitude: Keep the drone at a consistent altitude during the backward flight, adjusting throttle as necessary to avoid climbing or descending too early.

Step 2: Approach the Obstacle

  • Position the Drone: As you fly backward toward the obstacle, position the drone so that it’s centered on the object. Keep in mind that the drone’s camera is facing away from the obstacle, so you’ll rely on your backward flying skills to maintain alignment.
  • Throttle Management: Reduce throttle slightly to prepare for the flip. Too much throttle at this stage will cause the drone to shoot up, making it harder to execute the flip cleanly.

Step 3: Pitch Forward to Initiate the Flip

  • Flip the Drone: As you pass underneath the obstacle, push the right stick (pitch) forward to initiate the flip. The drone will begin to tilt forward and invert as it starts the flip over the obstacle.
  • Throttle Control: As the drone tilts forward and inverts, apply a small amount of throttle to keep it from dropping too quickly. The goal is to maintain momentum while the drone passes over the top of the object.

Step 4: Complete the Flip

  • Finish the Inverted Flip: After the drone passes over the obstacle and completes the forward flip, pull back slightly on the pitch stick (right stick) to level out and return to normal flight.
  • Throttle Adjustment: Increase throttle as needed to stabilize the drone and maintain altitude once the flip is complete.

Step 5: Exit the Maneuver Smoothly

  • Level Out: After completing the flip, bring the drone back to level flight and continue flying forward, ready to transition into your next maneuver or trick.
